Pilot 15

Just back in my room at the Ramada Birmingham Oldbury and typing this on the tiny keyboard of my new toy. But all this is mear tangental obfuscation, the real substance of this post is as follows.

Pilot 15 was a wonderfully mixed bag of performance styles. Kicking off with the a more traditional offer from Untied Artists, ladies and gentlemen- A Play no less. The best thing about these extracts from The Glassworks was the swearing 10 year old and the other worldly segments featuring him and a mirror. www.jakeoldershaw.com

The Kings of England presented Where We Live & What We Live For, they are Simon (imagine Simon Munnery crossed with a razor blade) and his engaging father Peter. Very much in the tradition of live art performance, this direct and contemplative piece was my kind of work. I really did like it, but was that little bit that prevented me from really feeling like I got it, the world they created didn't include me. www.bowesandson.blogspot.com

There was a lot for me to enjoy tonight, another thing I love is pathetic clown, add vulnerability, violence and anarchy and I'll watch you all night. So Millions and Pliers offering was right up my street, tender attempts at fractured biography inrupted by being pelted with big beef tomatoes! That's right folks tomatoes in the face, thrown really pretty hard. Excelllent. www.millionsandpliers.co.uk

The post interval shows will follow tomorrow these tiny keys are driving me nutty.

I'm back, many tomorrows later.

After the break at Pilot we were treated to a minimalist, 1984 tinged, response to Primal Scream's Come Together from Stan's Cafe. 3 performers in power suites, evoking a hopeful female PA, an severe and watchful body guard and the central charismatic political/motivational speaker. The most interesting thing was the revelation of the songs source material- a speech by Rev Jesse Jackson, leaving us with his words on an empty stage gave me a strong sense of revelation and misappropriation.

The next show came from Peter Fletcher and was titled Reflections On The Counting Of Sneezes, and in the manner espoused by a certain brand of wood stain, it did exactly what it said in the tin. What happens when you count your sneezes? You begin to value them, and see other's undocumented sneezes as somehow lost and wasted. You might just discover the value of all your time on planet earth too. I found this show sweet and enjoyable, in fact so much so that i was able to forget and therefore forgive its inclusion of my NUMBER ONE theatrical pet peeve. The review of this show has now ended and a has begun, let me explain- I cannot stand the brightest thing on stage being the fricken fracking apple symbol on the back of your blooming laptop, buy a laptop cover, plain and black and without branding and use it folks! Would you unthinkingly set yourself up on stage with a glowing white Nike tick on your chest, i doubt it, so do it with your techno gadgetry.
