Rapley Reviews: Prototype- Experiments in Theatre

Again the good people of the Tobacco Factory Theatre have given us a stormingly successful Prototype. In case you don't know this is a night of work in progress with feedback at the end and you can read what I've said about all the others here.

All the News.

On Saturday I tried to read all the news in all the newspapers that could be purchased from the newsagents near the Arnolfini. It was part of the We Live Here weekender. I then spent around thirteen and a half hours in the basement sitting in a comfy chair and reading. The results- I was hallucinating mildly after finishing, and had read all I ever want to read on the subject of Snow, had come to the conclusion that the only paper offering any actual news is The Financial Times, the rest are at best simply voyeurism, propaganda, pornography, stupidity, horror, filth and degradation.

I also teach Tai Chi

It's not something that I've ever mentioned before on this blog, but it's a major part of my life, so i thought it was about time to write something about it. There is also a further reason for mentioning it-

I have a new beginners Tai Chi class starting on the 3rd of February, with a free talk and demo on the 27th of January.

So if you've ever thought about giving it a go, why not come on down and try it out. You can find the other classes that are run by the school I'm part of here: Bristol Wutan

Getting Old

Getting old is apparently a matter of biological accounting. Let me explain...

1. In the wild animals do not (generally) get old. This is because 'the wild' is wild and therefore dangerous and so the animals die before ever reaching old age.

2. The body has to spend a certain percentage of the energy it consumes on maintainence and repair, because in the general course of chemical reaction within the body damage is done to the cells which must be repaired. The question then becomes- How much energy should be spent on these repairs?

Pilot 15

Just back in my room at the Ramada Birmingham Oldbury and typing this on the tiny keyboard of my new toy. But all this is mear tangental obfuscation, the real substance of this post is as follows.

Pilot 15 was a wonderfully mixed bag of performance styles. Kicking off with the a more traditional offer from Untied Artists, ladies and gentlemen- A Play no less. The best thing about these extracts from The Glassworks was the swearing 10 year old and the other worldly segments featuring him and a mirror. www.jakeoldershaw.com

Go See At Tether's End, Lyn Gardner Says so...

That's right:

"I've heard good things about The Wonder Club, one of Bristol's resident companies, which is staging a piece called At Tether's End for just four performances [this] week."

The Wonder Club have been mentioned not just once but twice in the past month on the What To See This Week posts on Lyn's Blog.

So if for some unknown reason you haven't got yourself a ticket yet then do so today (via the Tobacco Factory Box Office on 0117 9020344) for the excellent At Tether's End by those lovely folks over at The Wonder Club. They've been up all night for the last week getting it all ready, the least you can do is turn up and enjoy.

My best bits of advice are to explore the building there are plenty of people and situations you can get involved in and the only way to make the most of it is to really engage with them.

Myspace.Dumped

Well it's probably not worth blogging but i have dumped my Myspace profile so if you want to be my friend then you'll have to do it via that other social networking site just search for my name and take it from there. Alternatively and indeed additionally you can subscribe to the RSS from this site for full updates on whatever i think is important enough to write about.

New Phone Wonders

Well now I really feel like I'm living in the 21st century. I have just gotten myself the new G1 phone from T Mobile / Google / HTC and what a wonderful gadget it is. Running on Google's Android operating system this little beauty now means I can surf the web, check prices via barcodes, listen to and identify music, plan my day, pretend to be Mario, play the drums and annoy my girlfriend all at the same time, whilst walking down the street.

May we all bathe in the blueish light of low level radiation together.

Film, Video Games, and Performance Online

It has been an interesting few days. I have had a whole bunch of thoughts about work that i want to make. First of all i'm going to make a short film. The basic idea will be to present ten short second allegorical scenes each one being a single short held for a duration of 30 seconds. It will be made for online release only, because of the limited tricknology i will have access to, and the ease with which it can be released.

  • @andytfield is this what you mean? For me context is the world around and outside the work: its time & place.
  • @andytfield Yes critics should be looking at the work's meaning & the artist's intent rather than just the machinery which carries it.
